If there’s one thing Don Mancini has proven over the past 20 years it’s that Chucky is the most malleable horror icon of the 1980s, able to be placed into endless locations, situations, and storylines. The “Chucky” TV series in particular, now in its third season, has injected all kinds of new life into the killer doll, with various new iterations of the character introduced.
So what’s next for Chucky? While we wait for Season 3: Part 2, coming sometime in 2024, it sounds like the idea of Chucky battling M3GAN isn’t off the table at this point in time.
Introduced in the box office hit M3GAN earlier this year, M3GAN is of course a killer doll much like Chucky, the film essentially giving a high-tech update to killer doll movies of the past. Variety just brought up the idea of Chucky vs. M3GAN to Mancini, and he didn’t shoot it down.
“I would say, stay tuned,” Mancini replied during the chat this week.
As Variety notes in their interview with Mancini, “both properties [are] owned by NBCUniversal,” so the idea of a Chucky vs. M3GAN battle is not as far-fetched as it may sound.
Mancini also notes in the same interview that Chucky’s current crisis in Season 3 – he’s rapidly aging and seemingly dying – will force him to “contend with legitimate new contenders to the throne like M3GAN and Annabelle.” Mancini further explains, “He has to deal with that place for himself in the pop culture world and that’s how we really touch the ground with Chucky. We give this off-the-wall character a crisis that has the sting of real pain and real life. But it just makes him angrier and you know what happens when Chucky gets angry.”
So how would a Chucky vs. M3GAN mashup play out on screen? Are we talking about a full-on spinoff movie, or maybe a M3GAN cameo in the “Chucky” television series? Let’s not forget that Chucky visited the Amityville Horror house already this season. Anything is possible!
