“Chucky”: David Kohlsmith Plays a Young Charles Lee Ray in Syfy’s ‘Child’s Play’ Series

SYFY and USA’s “Chucky” is a fully in-canon sequel series to the Child’s Play films. In fact, the new synopsis revealed that it will be somewhat of an origin story, offering up the backstory behind Charles Lee Ray, a serial killer known as the Lakeshore Strangler who transfers his soul into a “Good Guy” doll at the beginning of the very first Child’s Play (1988).

Brad Dourif played Charles Lee Ray in the debut film, which opened with the killer being chased down and eventually shot in the middle of a toy store. Using voodoo magic, Ray finds himself trapped in the body of a doll, giving birth to Chucky and several Child’s Play sequels.

While we got a taste of Charles’ horrific past in Curse of Chucky (2017), “Chucky” will delve deep into the mind of a serial killer. As Dourif continues to voice the iconic doll, Bloody Disgusting learned that David Kohlsmith (The Prodigy, Shazam!) will play a very young Charles Lee Ray in the new series.

As previously noted, Brad Dourif is back as Chucky and Jennifer Tilly is back as Tiffany in “Chucky,” which will continue the storylines from the *original* movies and their recent sequels, Curse and Cult of Chucky. Also returning are Fiona Dourif as Nica Pierce, Alex Vincent as Andy Barclay, and Christine Elise as Kyle. Devon Sawa (Final DestinationHunter Hunter) also stars.

In the series, “After a vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, an idyllic American town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town’s hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, the arrival of enemies — and allies — from Chucky’s past threatens to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll’s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.”

The series premieres on SYFY & USA on October 12, 2021.
