Lovecraft fans who are also into deckbuilding games have something to look forward to later this month from Rewinding Games and publisher GCORES PUBLISHING. Their strategic exploration card game Roots Devour will launch on Steam on January 27th. A demo is currently available for prospective players to get the hang of the game’s card-connection mechanism.
Roots Devour casts you as a newborn Eldritch, having been summoned into this world. What else are you going to do other than grow in power to ultimately devour the world? To do so, you’ll need to extend your roots—piercing, entwining, and draining the lifeblood of the creatures you encounter. Meticulously plan this frantic spread, expanding through the unknown darkness until you dismantle the world, reconstruct it, and ultimately, consume it whole.
Unlike traditional card games, you must lay out your cards and expend resources to forge connections, fueling your relentless expansion. The full version of Roots Devour features 14 unique card decks and hundreds of cards, offering a vast array of ever-shifting synergies and playstyles. As your journey unfolds, you will unlock powerful new abilities that allow you to reshape the terrain, intervene in events, or turn the tide of a hopeless situation.
Spanning 5 chapters, you’ll start from the dim forest, making your way through treacherous swamps and snowy mountains, and eventually infiltrating the very heart of human settlements. Each area introduces unique mechanics and rules requiring you to adapt your strategy to continue.
On your journey, you will encounter characters with whom you can trade, engage in dialogue, or even claim them as your “Dependents.” You will stumble upon survivors, cultists, and madmen—all clinging to the frayed edges of their sanity. As the superior, you hold the threads of their lives in your hands. Your choices will alter their fates and ultimately dictate how your story ends.
