‘Black Phone 2’ Is an Icy World of Empowerment [The Lady Killers Podcast]

“Oh, Finney. You of all people know that “dead” is just a word.”

What’s scarier than a sinister magician/serial child  from the Stranger Danger 70s driving through town in a windowless van filled with a bunch of black balloons? Nothing. Except perhaps the same sinister magician as a rotting corpse seeking vengeance in the realm of dreams. Scott Derrickson follows his 2021 hit with the icy terror of Black Phone 2 which sees the Grabber (Ethan Hawke) call his would-be victim Finn (Mason Thames) from the depths of hell itself. Though the story centers the brutal murders of three children, Derrickson’s film is once again filled with heart and a message of empowerment.

Four years after her brother was abducted by a child murderer known as the Grabber, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) receives an eerie call of her own. Drawn in her sleep to the very basement in which her brother almost died, she receives a message from her beloved mother who passed away several years ago. Desperate to unravel the source of this strange connection, Gwen and Finn go to a winter camp wrapped in the thoughts of a major blizzard. When Finn receives a similar call, they realize that this is the site of the Grabber’s first kills.

In the latest episode of The Lady Killers podcast, co-hosts Jenn Adams, Sammie Roffman, and Rachel Reeves conclude a month of Snow Horror films with Derrickson’s terrifying story. Are the men of this story alright? From where do the siblings draw their strength? What’s so wrong with cursing a lot and seriously, what’s Barb’s (Maev Beaty) problem with Gwen? They’ll answer these questions and more while dissecting the feminist message lurking within this frozen nightmare.
