Lovecraft fans in the mood for a deckbuilding game can now indulge themselves in Rewinding Games’ strategic exploration card game Roots Devour, which is out now on Steam. To celebrate the launch, players can take advantage of a 10% discount until February 10.
And if you were looking for similar titles, you can grab Roots Devour as part of bundles with titles such as Look Outside, Menace from the Deep, and Out of Hands.
Roots Devour casts you as a newborn Eldritch, having been summoned into this world. What else are you going to do other than grow in power to ultimately devour the world? To do so, you’ll need to extend your roots—piercing, entwining, and draining the lifeblood of the creatures you encounter. Meticulously plan this frantic spread, expanding through the unknown darkness until you dismantle the world, reconstruct it, and ultimately, consume it whole.
Unlike traditional card games, you must lay out your cards and expend resources to forge connections, fuelling your relentless expansion. At its core, Roots Devour revolves entirely around the concept of “connection.” While fundamentally a card game, it breaks away from conventional Roguelike loops and turn-based combat, using cards as tactical tools for exploration and expansion. Players must strategically connect cards to extract vital blood, create new pathways, and venture into uncharted territories. Every card placed is part of a living ecosystem, where positioning directly affects triggers, buffs, and resource consumption between neighboring cards.
This design fosters a strategic experience that is persistent yet accessible. Unlike titles that demand heavy numerical calculations or the constant hesitation of “which card to play,” Roots Devour prioritizes the evaluation of risk and resource. The challenge lies in determining the optimal place and distance for card placement—using them as bridges to extend your reach toward your prey and maximize your gains across the map.
