Youviverse challenges players to save their sanity against the simulation in psychological horror game Cerebral, which is out today on Steam.
Combining P.T.‘s creeping tension and Sifu’s penalty system, Cerebral has players take on the role of Sophie, who awakens and finds herself in an ever-changing simulation, with no memory of how she ended up there. Meanwhile, the simulation is trying to corrupt her mind and manipulate her identity, erasing information on her captors. Sophie resist and escape the simulation through a variety of puzzles, where observation, choice, and caution determine your fate.
Cerebral employs a sinister gameplay mechanic, where as a way to “encourage” Sophie’s compliance, the simulation will make it easier for players to progress through the various puzzles by your deaths. However, in doing so, the simulation erases story clues, and drains your mental health. Hit zero, and your progress is wiped.
According to the developer, this unique penalty mechanic for Cerebral is a design choice meant to make players feel real tension, without relying on cheap jumpscares. Indeed, there are no jumpscares in the game, just dread, mystery, and “mind-bending” unease. Further upping the tension are the unpredictable events in the simulation, with multiple endings available to players, encouraging multiple playthroughs.
