Indie publisher Free Lives, together with developers hirohun, Mr.Pootsley, Jaybooty, and Lofar42, have launched their Buckshot Roulette-like medical horror game Side Effects on Steam. As further incentive, you can grab the game with a 15% launch discount that’s good until December 5. Unfortunately, while the demo is no longer available, you can still try out the prototype via the game’s itch.io page.
Available as a single player experience, or play online with up to four players, Side Effects has players each round presented with a selection of pills. Some are helpful, some are harmful, and some mean instant death. You never know what you’re about to consume or what it might do to your mind or body. Winning means outlasting – AKA, outliving – your opponent across the table.
Every pill (there are six types to test) you ingest impacts your resistance. Manage it wisely, as you have zero resistance to their effects. Between rounds, you can choose from a range of over 20 experimental items and treatments that can shift the odds in your favor, from vaccines to mouth clamps.
Keep in mind that the other patient, aka your “opponent” wants to outlast you. They’ll bluff, adapt, and use everything at their disposal to keep breathing one dose longer than you.
