5 New Horror Movies Releasing This Week Plus “True Detective” Returns

This year kicked off with the theatrical release of Blumhouse’s Night Swim last week, and the new releases are going to start picking up a bit here in the second full week of the new year.

You’ll find nothing new in theaters this week, but plenty of horror to watch at home.

SCREAMBOX is heading into the deep dark once again with Underground, which is now streaming on the Bloody Disgusting-powered streaming service to kick off the new year.

Inspired by true events, Lars Janssen‘s found footage nightmare finds a bachelorette party trapped in a World War II bunker complex.

Here’s the official plot synopsis: “In the midst of a spirited bachelorette party celebrating their friend’s upcoming wedding, a tight-knit group finds themselves on an unexpected and harrowing journey through an underground bunker, a long-forgotten fortification from World War 2. What began as a night of laughter, dancing, and unforgettable memories takes a nightmarish turn that none of them could have anticipated.”

Underground is the perfect double feature with SCREAMBOX favorite Deep Fear, in which a post-graduation celebration turns into a fight for survival in the catacombs of Paris.

Scout Taylor-Compton (Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Bloody Disgusting’s podcast Talk Scary to Me) is back with They Turned Us into Killers, now available on VOD outlets.

Scout Taylor-Compton stars alongside horror icons Kane Hodder and Michael Berryman, as well as Taryn Manning, Brian Anthony Wilson, Lauren Francesca, Bryce Draper, Brandon Irons, Maritza Brikisak, and Xander Goldman.

In the film, “A girl named Karma is drugged and assaulted by her boyfriend, BJ, which leads to her tragically committing suicide. Prior to this devastating event, she writes a letter to her best friend, Star, detailing the horrific events that unfolded that fateful night.

“Determined to seek revenge against those responsible, Star hunts down BJ and his brothers, and begins to torture them, while reading to them Karma’s suicide letter, before taking each of their lives.”

Thomas Walton directed They Turned Us into Killers.


Destroy All Neighbors Character Posters

Shudder aims to get 2024 off to a prog-rockin’ new start with splatter-comedy Destroy All Neighbors, starring Alex Winter and Jonah Ray Rodrigues. It’s streaming January 12.

In the film, “William Brown (Jonah Ray Rodrigues), a neurotic, self-absorbed musician determined to finish his prog-rock magnum opus, faces a creative roadblock in the form of a noisy and grotesque neighbor named Vlad (Alex Winter). Finally working up the nerve to demand that Vlad keep it down, William inadvertently decapitates him.

“But, while attempting to cover up one murder, William’s accidental reign of terror causes victims to pile up and become undead corpses who torment and create more bloody detours on his road to prog-rock Valhalla.”

Contracted: Phase II‘s Josh Forbes directed Destroy All Neighbors from a screenplay by Charles Pieper and Jared Logan, with story by Pieper and Mike Benner.


T.I.M. Trailer - Farren and Campbell

Barbarian‘s Georgina Campbell (Bird Box: Barcelona) returns to horror once more, this time in the ’90s style sci-fi thriller T.I.M. (Technologically Integrated Manservant).

Brainstorm Media is set to release T.I.M. in theaters and On Demand on Friday, January 12.

Eamon Farren (“The Witcher,” “Twin Peaks”), Mark Rowley (“The Last Kingdom”), and Amara Karan (“Doctor Who”) star alongside Campbell.

The film follows “Abi (Georgina Campbell), a prosthetics engineer, and her husband Paul (Mark Rowley). As they adapt to a new life outside the city, Abi’s latest project, the A.I. humanoid T.I.M. (Eamon Farren), initially appears as the perfect aid. Programmed to serve only her, it transforms into a perilous obsession, determined to replace Paul.”

T.I.M marks the debut film from British filmmaker Spencer Brown (Shed of the Dead), who co-wrote the screenplay with Sarah Govett.


Described as a Hitchcockian thriller, Dark Sky Films is releasing Laced to select theaters and VOD/Digital on Friday, starring Succession‘s Hermione Lynch and Zack Tinke.

Dark Sky Previews, “Set in a single location, the piece explores the claustrophobic nature of young love strung with toxicity and lies, and the cyclical nature of violence.”

“In a remote cabin on the evening of a record-breaking blizzard, a young woman plots to poison her abusive husband in order to end their toxic relationship once and for all. When the poison fails to kill him, she not only has to quickly concoct a backup plan, but also contend with her husband’s increasing suspicion that his intensifying illness isn’t wholly accidental. And with the unexpected arrival of her brother, her carefully crafted scheme threatens to spiral ever further out of control. Now trapped together as the snow piles up, double-crosses and horrifying secrets threaten to ensnare each of them in their own spiderwebs of deception.”

True Detective Jodie Foster

The biggest new release for the week is “True Detective: Night Country,” with the brand new season of HBO’s hit anthology series premiering on Max on Sunday, January 14.

From writer/director/showrunner/executive producer Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid), “Night Country” stars Jodie Foster alongside Kali Reis, and the full trailer is below.

John Hawkes (Deadwood, Winter’s Bone), Christopher Eccleston (The Leftovers), Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve)Finn Bennett (Domina) and Anna Lambe (Three Pines) will also star.

“When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”
